Pipes for Perth - East Fremantle

We are renewing 3km of water pipes in East Fremantle, Bicton and Palmyra. This work will improve the security and reliability of the water supply to the area for decades to come.

Construction work will begin from Monday, 10 January 2022 and will be completed in a staged approach continuing through to late 2022.

How can I find out more about the project or ask a question?

To support local businesses in the area and to mitigate risks of the project impacting on their peak spring/summer trading season, Water Corporation has decided to delay a portion of this project work to Winter 2023.

Due to unforeseen circumstances, delays and pre-existing commitments, installation of the new watermain along Petra St, at the intersection of Canning Highway, between Hammad St and Bicton Centre Shopping Centre (inclusive of the micro-tunnelling) is deferred, and will resume in June 2023. Please refer to the map below.

This decision has been made to keep to our previous commitments made to these businesses, and has been made in consultation and support of the local businesses, their representatives and the local governments.

All remaining work for 2022, as shown in orange on the map, is planned to be completed by November 2022.

We will return next year In June 2023 to complete the sections shown in red as displayed on the map.

We thank you for your patience and understanding while we have been carrying the majority of our essential work across East Fremantle, Bicton and Palmyra. We will keep you updated with more information as we progress.

  • To support local businesses during our Pipes for East Fremantle work, we are running two competitions.

Competitions are run by Water Corporation in consultation with local businesses, their representatives, local schools and governments.

The initiative aims to support businesses impacted by construction along Petra Street, particularly those at Bicton Central Shopping Centre and Stammers Marketplace.

The competition aims to activate the shopping complex and bring the community together. It is a way for businesses to reward their loyal customers, attract new customers and complement their existing marketing business initiatives.

The competitions will run from 22 July – 19 August 2022. The two competitions include an:

    1. Art competition

Year 5/6 students at local schools are invited to participate in an art competition: ‘Saving the Planet’ – Think Climate Change'.

The participating student’s will have their artwork displayed at local participating businesses around Bicton Shopping Centre and Stammers Marketplace.

Scan the QR codes found in-store to vote online, and the art design with the most votes will win.

One winner from each school will be announced by Water Corporation after the competition end date. A prize in form of a $50.00 voucher/gift card will be awarded to each winner.

    2. Business receipt submission competition

Customers of any participating and eligible business can scan the QR codes found in-store to apply online.

Submit a photo of your receipts along with your contact details to enter.  A winner selected every week! The prize will be a $20.00 voucher/gift card that will be awarded to each winner.

    Terms and conditions apply.

  • In March, we notified you about our work delays along George, Moss and Fletcher streets. The laying of the new water pipe along your street is now complete and the final stage of resurfacing the road was scheduled to be completed in April.

With significant ongoing COVID-19 impacts, in addition to the increase in large-scale infrastructure projects in WA and general high demand in the construction industry, there is a lack of available skilled contractors and supply shortages across the state and nationally. Unfortunately, this means further delays to completion of our works on your street.

We are aware of the impact and frustration this is causing but please be assured we are doing everything possible to complete the work as soon as possible – we will update you again when we have a confirmed timeframe.

We would like to apologise for any inconvenience caused and thank you for your patience and understanding.

  • To safely install the new water pipe, properties in the area may experience temporary interruptions and pressure changes to their water supply. We will contact you directly if your property is affected.

    When is this happening?

Temporary changes to your water supply may occur within the coming months as we progress with construction of the new water pipe.

    What will the impacts be?

Water supply interruptions: If your property is affected, you will be notified at least 48 hours in advance. Please contact us if you have any questions or concerns.

Water pressure changes: While the new pipe is installed, the flow of water through the network will be redirected which may cause a slight drop in your water pressure. Once the new pipe is installed, the water network and your water pressure will return to normal.

Work within the verge: There will be minor work completed within the verge to access existing water pipes. All areas impacted by construction work will be returned to as close to their original condition as possible.

We thank you for your patience while we carry out this essential work.

  • COVID Update

Work on George Street has been temporarily suspended following several contractors testing positive for COVID-19. Unfortunately, resourcing shortages will impact the progress of the project.

We intend to resume work as soon as reasonably possible and appreciate your understanding and patience during this time.

The team working on Fletcher Street has tested negative and will continue working. Please see the 'Staging and Estimated Timeframes' for the most up-to-date information.

The safety of our employees, contractors and the community is our priority, in line with WA Government public health measures.

For faults, security and emergencies, phone Water Corporation’s Operations Centre on 13 75 75 (24/7).

  • Historic pipelines supplying drinking water to East Fremantle, Palmyra and Bicton for nearly a century will soon be replaced as part of a project to maintain water supply reliability in the area.

Work will begin in early November to install around three kilometres of water pipe, replacing a section of water main first laid in 1923.
